Author Biography

Daniel Gerard Cole, Smithsonian Institution

As GIS Coordinator and Chief Cartographer of the Smithsonian (SI), he has worked at SI since 1986. He co-edited, with the late Imre Sutton, Mapping Native America: Cartographic Interactions between Indigenous Peoples, Government, and Academia, 3 vols., 2014. He has designed and created maps for multiple exhibits at the National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian, and Sackler Gallery of Asian Art.  He also serves as cartographic, GIS and GPS consultant to other staff scientists, exhibit staff and illustrators. He is a past-president of the Canadian Cartographic Association and is currently president-elect for the Cartography and Geographic Information Society.
